The Week That Was is the
new guise of Peter Brewis, formerly of the brilliant Field Music, who is now fed
up with watching re-runs of Diagnosis Murder after the north-east trio went on
indefinite hiatus.

It seems like 2008 really is on the verge of something. Numerous fully realised ‘albums’ have been exploding out of the dubstep scene to critical acclaim. Ignore Burial for a second… if you can… people like 2562, iTAL TEk and Scuba have also unleashed long players, that hinged on doing something new with the deep bass template, to critical and underground acclaim.

Trunk Records deal in re-issues and it has to be said, it’s what they do incredibly well. Unearthing rarities that the world should prick up their spok tinted ears and pay some goddamn attention too. Well... that’s how this reviewer sees it anyway.

The Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir - Ten Thousand |

With all this talk of choirs lately, well some shit influx of so called ‘culture’ on my Saturday afternoon TV presented by that smug dickless DIY wonderboy Nick Knowles, I’m ready to pose a question… How many people does it take to be classed a choir?

Sigur Ros - Meo suo I eyrum vio spilum endalaust |

There is a warmth and richness to Sigur Ros’ fifth album, (wait
for it), ‘Meo suo I eyrum vio spilum endalaust’, and that’s without the
umlauts. Put more simply, this translates as ‘With a buzz in our ears we play
endlessly’. This kind of makes sense with the lushness of sounds reminiscent of
Mumm, Arcade Fire, and a whole host of indie film soundtracks.

Lützenkirchen - Pandora Electronica |

Written by James Balf

Tobias Lützenkirchen is the man behind ‘Pandora
Electronica’. As well as creating a wealth of productions the Munich based
techno producer has DJed all over the world, yet oddly this is his debut album.
Tobias himself is a bit of a genre spanner, (think jackin’ electro infused rave
that echoes the sound of Chicago, via a warm progressive voyage into German house)
and this really becomes apparent on the album, suitably titled
under a banner that suggests a box of electronic delights.

New York based musicians with an orgy of 'special

movie villain, consistently miss their targets.

Chances are most people who recognise the name will have seen Anton Newcombe's 'antics' in the fantastic documentary 'Dig!', charting the friendship and competition that grew between The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols over the mid-to-late-nineties.

Step
through the door of this bakehouse and you’ll find yourself bombarded by
unabashedly stripped down beats flying in all directions off the numerous
shelves. Before these thumping sonic bombs explode in your ears though, you’ll
notice great slabs of thick, drawled lyrics generously spread over those beats.

Prod is the debut artist to release on the impressively

world of bastard jazz, lounge IDM and somewhere along the line… piano balladry.

X-press 2 - Raise Your Hands: The Greatest Hits |

Written by Tobold Hemming

The
idea of a real dance music long player, rather than a concept album or an
exploration of influences (some tiresome jazz noodling or ethno hip hop for example) has
always been a bit of an anomaly. Surely the whole point of a sweaty rave anthem
is in its impact on the dance floor, not at home on the family stereo?
