![]() For many ‘Workout Holiday’ has been a while coming. After storming SXSW over in Texas the WD trio jetted the ocean to unleash a slew of high octane shows on UK audiences this April and since then the press has been set alight with their antics. White Denim as a band, are a bolshy mess – FACT - but when the music clicks it’s like a fingersnap that’s louder than thunder. The eons of space within the instrumental jam on the late part of album opener ‘Let’s Talk About It’ serves only to tease a little of their musical depth into earshot. They’re a greasy garage band, granted, but there are numerous flashes of brilliance woven in the plethora of styles attempted on ‘Workout Holiday’ such as ‘All You Really Have To Do’ which is one of the sleeker jams which relies heavily on that low swung, tight wound bass sound of the late 70s being a huge draw before the distinguished chorus erupts into your short term memory. The budget recording techniques only enhance the charm of a band who are currently riding a tidal wave of media attention and their lo-fi sound mirrors their somewhat understated personal presence. Cut short, the attention is deserved. They’re pure… a band who lose themselves in their own intricacies, a band who aren’t scared to rock the shit out one minute (‘Darksided Computer Moth’) and then bump their shoulders rhythmically in a George Formby kind of manner the next (Look That Way At It)… and I for one can only commend that.
